Buying Golf Wedges

A wedge is a popular club, with many golfers using them for up to three quarters of the time when they are 120 yards or further from the hole. A good wedge can help you to get a much better score and it can be possible to create some almost perfect shots, if you choose the right one.

Picking the right wedge is therefore important as it can put you above other players. You may tend to stick to a particular brand or one that you have always liked, but it is worth thinking about what other options are out there.

Many single wedges have stainless steel shafts which are quite stiff. There is also a choice of graphite ones, which are more expensive. Because you only use a short swing, they do not really need to be that flexible. It is the loft that golfers tend to be more interested in when they are buying a wedge. The lofts tend to be as follows: lob wedge, 58-64 degrees, sand wedge 56-58 degrees, gap wedge 51-55 degrees and pitching wedge 47-50 degrees.

Bounce is also something which could be important. This will depend on your swing and is the degree of difference between the width of sole of the club and the trailing and leading edges. Thinking about whether your swing is wide and shallow or is steep, which most amateurs are, will help you to know more about your bounce factor. The bounce is between 6 and 18 degrees and a shallow swing will be around 8 and will prevent the ball being hit far too high and steep swing will need one towards the higher end which will stop the club taking divots out of the ground. However, the course may also have an influence on the bounce as softer courses need a higher bounce and firmer ones a lower one.
